Drawings 2021 - 2023

These drawings were conceived using a machine learning framework termed generative adversarial network (GAN). The task was to input my datasets of Australian landscapes into the GAN and translate and transfer the GAN image outputs to paper. Fleshing out the AI image outputs was fraught with difficulty. How to establish a point of view? How to render an alien world filled with familiar features.

Dennis McCart describes his artistic practice as an exploration of “landscapes within the ‘margins’, places no one thinks to look for an experience of beauty or meaning”. Michael Jacobson writes “In its tunnels and overpasses, telegraph poles, drains and concrete walls, Dennis finds artistic inspiration among the abandoned and the atrophied.”
