Delighted that my painting The Fallen has been selected as a finalist in the Moreton Bay art award for 2017. This painting again explores my concerns that our real wilderness is not an idealized place somewhere out there the country that you drive hours to get to, but rather right here in the city and urban edgelands where most of us live. Its here in these unregulated landscapes on the fringes of our cities that a battle is being waged. The painting depicts felled industrial concrete columns and rubble strewn along the shoreline of the Colmslie reach of the Brisbane river and recalls the fallen structures of a past civilization. Overwritten daily by tides, wind and erosion this landscape is exposed and transformed by our detritus. This is a place of true wilderness, isolated and forgotten a unregulated landscape processes a cautionary and paradoxical beauty.
